QTS Data Centers’ £10 billion ($13.5 billion) hyperscale campus in Cambois, Northumberland, represents one of the largest single-site data center investments in European history. Spanning 133 acres on the former industrial site of the Blyth Power Station, the master-planned development encompasses 10 state-of-the-art three-story data center buildings totaling over 5.8 million square feet (540,000 sqm) of computing space. Engineered specifically to support next-generation artificial intelligence workloads, deep learning model training, and European multi-cloud hosting, the facility reinforces the UK’s position as a primary European AI infrastructure hub. The development represents a major economic rebirth for North East England, replacing a stalled industrial battery factory scheme with long-term digital infrastructure. The site selection leverages direct access to high-voltage national grid capacity and subsea fiber routes while creating thousands of regional construction jobs and hundreds of permanent technical positions. The project has earned CITB National Skills Academy for Construction status, establishing local workforce training initiatives across Northumberland Sustainability is central to the campus master plan. The facility utilizes QTS’s proprietary water-free, closed-loop liquid cooling system that recirculates coolant to maintain optimal thermal thresholds for high-density GPU racks without consuming local municipal water. Powered by clean energy through offshore wind Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) from the North Sea grid, the Northumberland campus operates as a zero-carbon, highly resilient compute core for cloud providers and AI enterprises across EMEA.
