Project Overview

Rufus Data Centre Campus is a proposed 540 MW greenfield artificial intelligence hyperscale development planned at Purroch Farm on Mauchline Road near Hurlford in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Developed by Hamilton-based ILI Group, the project represents one of the major components of “The Stoics,” a planned £15 billion mega-scale Scottish data center cluster comprising the Rufus, Cato in Fife, and Aurelius in North Lanarkshire developments. The Rufus campus is purpose-built to accommodate the rapidly growing infrastructure requirements of artificial intelligence, machine learning, high-performance computing, and other power-intensive digital workloads. Its planned 540 MW capacity provides substantial room for large-scale AI model training, inference, streaming, cloud computing, and advanced computational applications that require high-density processing environments. The development is expected to incorporate multi-story modular data halls, providing a scalable approach to construction and allowing computing capacity to be expanded in phases as customer demand increases. An on-site high-voltage electrical substation is also planned to provide the dedicated power infrastructure necessary to support the campus and improve the resilience of its electrical supply. Thermal management is another key element of the design, with closed-loop liquid cooling systems planned to handle the significant heat generated by high-density AI and accelerated computing hardware while supporting efficient resource use. The campus is designed to operate using 100% off-site renewable power, aligning the development with Scotland’s growing focus on low-carbon digital infrastructure. Together with its substantial power capacity, advanced cooling architecture, modular data hall design, and renewable energy strategy, Rufus could become a significant AI infrastructure hub in Scotland. Its development would also contribute to the wider transformation of East Ayrshire and strengthen Scotland’s position in the European market for large-scale, energy-conscious AI and cloud computing infrastructure.
