Project Overview

The Schwarz Group Dummerstorf Data Center is a proposed €500 million-plus sovereign cloud and artificial intelligence data center campus planned within the Industrial Park Dummerstorf near Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Developed by Schwarz Digits, the technology and digital division of Schwarz Group, which operates retail businesses including Lidl and Kaufland, the project is intended to expand the group’s STACKIT cloud infrastructure and strengthen its position in Europe’s rapidly growing sovereign cloud market. The multi-hectare development is designed to provide secure and locally controlled data hosting for enterprise customers, retail operations, public sector organizations, and increasingly demanding AI workloads that require high-performance computing and stringent data-sovereignty requirements. Sustainability is a central component of the planned campus, with the facility expected to incorporate infrastructure for exporting recovered data center waste heat into local district heating networks. This approach could improve overall energy efficiency by converting heat generated by computing equipment into a useful resource for surrounding communities. The data center is also planned to support direct-to-chip liquid cooling, enabling efficient thermal management for high-density AI servers and next-generation computing hardware while reducing reliance on conventional cooling systems. Electricity sourcing is expected to rely on 100% renewable energy procurement, with Baltic Sea offshore wind power providing an important component of the campus’s low-carbon energy strategy. Its location near Rostock offers access to Germany’s electricity and telecommunications infrastructure while positioning the development within an emerging northern European digital infrastructure corridor. By combining sovereign cloud capabilities, AI-ready computing, renewable power, liquid cooling, and waste-heat recovery, the Dummerstorf campus represents Schwarz Digits’ broader strategy of developing resilient European digital infrastructure that can support sensitive enterprise and public-sector workloads while improving environmental performance.
