Status: Under Construction Phase | Location: 49-85 Kashiwahara, Tomakomai, Hokkaido 059-1362, Japan
The SoftBank Hokkaido Campus Data Center, located at 49-85 Kashiwahara in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, represents SoftBank’s flagship AI-focused data center development in Northern Japan. Designed as a green AI supercomputing complex, the campus is planned to support up to 300.0 MW of critical IT power load across multiple high-density facilities, creating substantial capacity for next-generation artificial intelligence and cloud computing workloads. The development is purpose-built to accommodate advanced generative AI model training, sovereign cloud services, high-performance computing, and automated digital workloads requiring significant computational resources. Its location in Hokkaido provides access to a growing supply of renewable energy, including regional wind and solar generation, while the island’s naturally cooler climate creates opportunities for highly efficient cooling operations and reduced mechanical cooling requirements. Electrical infrastructure is designed around high-voltage utility interconnections with Hokkaido Electric Power, supported by static 2N and Block N+1 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) configurations and emergency backup generation systems to maintain continuity during grid interruptions. Thermal management incorporates high-efficiency free-cooling technologies, supplemented by direct-to-chip liquid cooling and immersion cooling solutions designed for dense GPU and AI accelerator clusters. The campus is also planned with extensive telecommunications infrastructure, including subterranean dark-fiber entry vaults, dual carrier-neutral meet-me rooms, and low-latency optical connectivity linking the site with Tokyo and regional coastal cable landing points. Advanced physical and cybersecurity measures, including biometric access controls and zero-trust security architecture, further strengthen the facility’s operational resilience. Collectively, these capabilities position the Tomakomai campus as a strategic AI infrastructure hub supporting Japan’s expanding demand for high-performance computing and energy-efficient digital infrastructure.
