Project Overview

T1 Energy Mo i Rana Data Center is a major brownfield artificial intelligence infrastructure conversion project located at the former FREYR Giga Arctic battery manufacturing site in Mo i Rana, Norway. The development repurposes approximately 926,000 square feet of existing industrial facility space under a 50-year lease, providing a substantial built environment for the deployment of advanced AI and high-performance computing infrastructure without requiring an entirely new greenfield site. Phase 1 has secured 50 MW of dedicated grid power from national grid operator Statnett, with initial operations targeted for 2027. The campus is also positioned in the interconnection queue for up to 396 MW of total power capacity, providing a pathway for substantial expansion as demand for AI computing infrastructure increases. The site's access to Nordic hydropower provides a low-cost renewable electricity source for energy-intensive computing workloads and supports the project's focus on efficient power procurement. Mo i Rana's northern climate also creates favorable conditions for free cooling, with sub-zero ambient temperatures providing opportunities to reduce mechanical cooling requirements and improve facility efficiency. These environmental characteristics are particularly relevant for AI infrastructure, where high-density computing systems generate significant thermal loads and require robust cooling solutions. The development also provides direct integration with regional dark fiber networks, supporting high-capacity and low-latency connectivity for cloud platforms, AI workloads, enterprise applications, and other data-intensive services. The brownfield conversion approach allows the project to leverage existing industrial infrastructure while establishing a new use for a large-scale facility originally developed for battery manufacturing. The combination of secured initial power capacity, potential long-term expansion, renewable Nordic hydropower, climate-assisted cooling, existing industrial space, and dark fiber connectivity provides a foundation for scalable AI infrastructure deployment. With Phase 1 targeted for 2027, T1 Energy Mo i Rana Data Center represents a conversion of established industrial assets into a dedicated platform for next-generation computing workloads.
