New Delhi, India - March 30, 2026 - Bharti Airtel has secured USD 1 billion in funding for its data center subsidiary Nxtra Data, marking one of the largest investments in India’s digital infrastructure sector as demand for AI-ready capacity continues to rise.

The funding round includes participation from global investors such as Alpha Wave Global, Carlyle Group, and Anchorage Capital, alongside continued investment from Airtel. The transaction values Nxtra at approximately USD 3.1 billion, while Airtel will retain a controlling stake in the business.

The capital infusion will be used to significantly expand Nxtra’s data center footprint, with the company targeting a scale-up from its current capacity of around 300 megawatts to nearly 1 gigawatt over the coming years. The expansion is being driven by accelerating demand for AI, cloud computing, and data localization, which are reshaping infrastructure requirements across India.

Nxtra currently operates a network of 14 core data centers and more than 120 edge facilities nationwide. The company plans to develop new hyperscale campuses in key markets, including Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata, with a focus on supporting high-density AI workloads and enterprise cloud services.

We are building a future-ready digital infrastructure platform to serve the evolving needs of enterprises and hyperscalers,” said Gopal Vittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Airtel. He added that the company aims to scale rapidly while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and operational efficiency.

The investment reflects a broader shift in the telecom sector, where operators are expanding beyond connectivity into integrated digital infrastructure services. For Airtel, Nxtra has emerged as a strategic growth engine, enabling the company to tap into rising enterprise demand for colocation, cloud, and managed hosting solutions.

Industry analysts note that India’s data center market is entering a phase of rapid expansion, fueled by AI adoption, regulatory requirements for data localization, and increasing digital consumption. Large-scale investments such as this are expected to intensify competition among domestic players and global hyperscalers.

With this funding, Nxtra is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the fast-growing market while contributing to the development of AI-ready infrastructure in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.
