Airtel Eyes Larger Telangana Data Center Expansion as Hyderabad Emerges as Strategic AI Infrastructure Hub

Hyderabad, India - July 1, 2026 - Bharti Airtel is considering expanding its data center footprint in Telangana following discussions with the state government, signaling renewed investment in AI-ready digital infrastructure as Hyderabad strengthens its position as one of India's fastest-growing data center markets.

The announcement followed a meeting between Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, during which the two sides discussed accelerating Airtel's ongoing digital infrastructure projects in the state. While Mittal remarked that Hyderabad is being considered as Airtel's "second headquarters," the discussions placed significant emphasis on expanding the company's data center and AI infrastructure investments.

According to the Telangana government, Airtel will evaluate increasing the capacity of its planned data center in Chandanvelly, on the outskirts of Hyderabad, while also exploring the development of a larger integrated AI infrastructure campus. The government has urged the company to fast-track construction of the Chandanvelly facility, which is expected to strengthen the state's rapidly expanding digital infrastructure ecosystem.

The proposed expansion comes as demand for AI computing continues to reshape India's data center landscape. Hyperscale cloud providers, enterprises, and AI developers are driving demand for facilities capable of supporting higher power densities, advanced cooling technologies, and resilient connectivity. Telangana has positioned itself to capture this growth through investments in power infrastructure, industrial land, and streamlined approvals for digital infrastructure projects.

Hyderabad has emerged as one of India's most attractive destinations for data center development alongside Mumbai and Chennai. The city offers a combination of reliable power, fiber connectivity, competitive operating costs, and a growing technology ecosystem, making it an increasingly preferred location for hyperscale operators and colocation providers. The expansion of AI workloads has further strengthened Hyderabad's appeal as operators seek additional capacity beyond more saturated markets.

The discussions also covered broader opportunities in cloud services, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital platforms, areas that are expected to increase demand for high-capacity data centers over the coming years. Although no investment value or project timeline was announced, the proposed expansion builds on Airtel's existing commitment to develop digital infrastructure in Telangana through its data center business.

For Airtel, expanding its Telangana operations would reinforce its strategy of growing beyond telecommunications into cloud and digital infrastructure services. Through its data center subsidiary, Nxtra by Airtel, the company has been investing in hyperscale and edge facilities to support enterprise cloud adoption and AI-driven computing across India.

The development also reflects intensifying competition among Indian states to attract AI infrastructure investments. As global demand for AI compute accelerates, governments are increasingly competing to secure large-scale data center projects that generate long-term investment, skilled employment, and supporting digital ecosystems. If Airtel proceeds with a larger AI-ready campus in Telangana, the project would further strengthen Hyderabad's role as a strategic hub for India's next generation of cloud and AI infrastructure while supporting the country's broader digital transformation ambitions.
