Edmonton, Alberta, October 6, 2025- Meta Platforms is set to collaborate with Pembina Pipeline Corporation and Calgary-based Kineticor to build a large-scale AI data centre northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. The facility represents a significant step in the province’s strategy to attract advanced digital infrastructure and position itself as a hub for AI computing in Canada.
The project will leverage Kineticor’s expertise in natural gas-fired power generation to provide reliable, high-density electricity for the energy-intensive operations of Meta’s AI workloads. The site is located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, a region known for its established energy infrastructure and access to transmission networks.
“This collaboration is a strategic milestone for Alberta’s digital economy,” said a provincial spokesperson. “By aligning AI infrastructure with locally sourced energy, we are creating a model for sustainable, high-performance computing that supports both industry growth and job creation.”
Regulatory approvals are underway, with construction and operational timelines targeting the late 2020s. The data centre will not only provide low-latency compute capacity for Meta’s AI initiatives but also bolster the province’s ambition to offer sovereign, resilient cloud alternatives to global operators.
For Alberta, the Meta-Pembina-Kineticor partnership exemplifies the growing intersection of energy and technology. Analysts note that coupling AI infrastructure with regionally sourced power is an emerging trend, offering both economic and environmental advantages while addressing the massive energy demands of modern AI systems.
The collaboration is also expected to have a multiplier effect, attracting additional data centre and tech investments to the province and reinforcing Alberta’s role in North America’s AI ecosystem.
