OpenAI and AMD Forge Strategic Partnership to Deploy 6 Gigawatts of AI Compute Power

Santa Clara, California, October 6, 2025- OpenAI and AMD have announced a multi-year strategic partnership to deploy 6 gigawatts (GW) of AMD Instinct GPUs, a move aimed at significantly expanding OpenAI’s generative AI infrastructure. The initial phase will see the deployment of 1 GW of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs starting in the second half of 2026, before scaling up to the full 6 GW over subsequent phases.

As part of the agreement, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, which will vest upon achieving specific technical and commercial milestones, including the initial deployment.

The partnership positions OpenAI to meet the growing computational demands of its AI models while highlighting the critical role of high-performance hardware in enabling next-generation AI applications. By securing a dedicated supply of AMD’s GPUs, OpenAI strengthens its ability to scale efficiently and maintain a competitive edge in AI development.

Industry analysts note that collaborations between AI software developers and hardware providers are increasingly vital as AI models grow in complexity and demand vast compute resources. The OpenAI–AMD deal is among the largest commitments to AI infrastructure in recent years and signals a broader trend of deepening hardware-software partnerships in the AI ecosystem.
