London, September 12, 2025- OpenAI and Nvidia are preparing to announce a multibillion-dollar commitment to develop AI-ready data centers across the United Kingdom. The pledge is expected to coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump’s state visit next week, during which a delegation of American tech executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, will highlight U.S. commitments to bolster the UK's digital infrastructure.
The investments will be executed in collaboration with Nscale Global Holdings Ltd., a London-based data center operator. Nscale announced in late 2024 a USD 2.5 billion, three-year plan to develop UK data centers, including a major site in Essex capable of housing up to 45,000 high-end Nvidia chips. OpenAI and Nvidia's involvement adds significant scale and credibility, potentially positioning OpenAI as an anchor customer.
While exact investment figures remain undisclosed, the pledges are described as "multibillion-dollar," focusing on building and expanding data centers to meet surging AI demands. The formal announcement is expected during the UK visit, aligning with broader U.S. investments totaling tens of billions across various sectors.
This move underscores the escalating global race for AI infrastructure, driven by the immense computing power required for large language models like OpenAI's GPT series.
For the UK, the investments support Prime Minister Keir Starmer's push to position London as a tech hub, complementing the government's GBP 1 billion (USD 1.31 billion) public funding to expand national computing capacity by 20 times.
It also reflects OpenAI and Nvidia's ongoing collaboration, including their joint release of two open-source AI models in August 2025, and helps address Europe's growing need for AI-ready data centers amid regulatory and energy challenges. The deal could enhance the UK's role in the European AI economy, fostering job creation and innovation while strengthening transatlantic tech ties.
