Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - March 29, 2026 - The government of Papua New Guinea has officially launched its first sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Port Moresby, marking a significant step in the country’s push to build secure, locally controlled digital infrastructure and accelerate its AI capabilities.

The facility, developed through a collaboration between state-owned telecom provider Telikom PNG, IT services firm Datec PNG, and global cloud provider CloudSigma, is designed to enable high-performance AI workloads while ensuring that sensitive national data remains within the country’s borders.

Government officials framed the launch as a strategic move toward digital sovereignty. “This is not just a launch of infrastructure; it is about sovereignty and securing our nation’s digital future,” a senior official said during the inauguration, emphasizing the importance of retaining control over data generated within the country.

The AI data center is expected to support a wide range of applications, including advanced data processing, machine learning, and public sector modernization. By hosting AI workloads locally, the facility aims to reduce latency, improve service delivery, and minimize reliance on overseas data centers, which have traditionally handled much of the country’s digital processing needs.

Officials highlighted that the infrastructure will play a critical role in transforming government operations, enabling more efficient and data-driven decision-making across departments. The platform is also expected to support emerging use cases such as automated public services and AI-assisted administrative systems.

Beyond government applications, the launch is positioned as a foundational step in building Papua New Guinea’s digital economy. Authorities have indicated that the data center will help attract technology investment, foster innovation, and support the country’s ambition to become a regional digital hub.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the government to integrate AI into national development strategies, including exploring its use in areas such as recruitment systems, visa processing, and public administration.

Industry observers note that Papua New Guinea’s move reflects a growing global trend, where nations are investing in sovereign AI infrastructure to maintain control over critical data assets and reduce dependence on foreign hyperscale cloud providers.

With this launch, Papua New Guinea joins a rising group of countries prioritizing AI-ready data center ecosystems as part of long-term economic and technological planning.
