Mumbai, India - July 22, 2026 - Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has acquired large land parcels in Visakhapatnam and Pune, strengthening the foundation for Tata Group's expanding AI data center ambitions as OpenAI prepares to scale its computing infrastructure in India through its partnership with Tata's digital infrastructure business.
According to people familiar with the matter, TCS has secured 200 acres in Anakapalli, near Visakhapatnam, and purchased an 88-acre site in Pune's Bopkhel area for approximately INR 640.5 crore (~USD 66.61 million). While neither TCS nor OpenAI has confirmed that the sites will host OpenAI facilities, the acquisitions are widely viewed as supporting the next phase of Tata's AI-ready data center expansion.
The Visakhapatnam site is particularly significant because it is located near one of India's fastest-growing digital infrastructure corridors, where multiple hyperscale developments are underway. The Andhra Pradesh government has been actively promoting the region as an AI and cloud infrastructure hub, with major investments in power, connectivity, and industrial infrastructure attracting global technology companies.
The land acquisitions build on Tata's strategic partnership with OpenAI announced earlier this year, under which Tata's HyperVault platform will develop AI-ready data center infrastructure for the artificial intelligence company. The collaboration initially targets 100 MW of AI computing capacity, with plans to scale toward 1 GW over time, positioning it among India's largest planned AI infrastructure initiatives.
For the data center industry, the latest developments highlight the increasing importance of land banking as operators prepare for the next generation of AI campuses. Unlike conventional facilities, AI data centers require significantly larger sites to accommodate high-density computing clusters, expanded electrical infrastructure, advanced cooling systems, and future capacity growth.
The Pune acquisition also reinforces western India as a strategic market for enterprise and hyperscale deployments. The region offers access to established fiber networks, a large technology workforce, and proximity to major cloud and enterprise customers, making it an attractive location for AI infrastructure investment.
India's data center sector has witnessed accelerating investment over the past year as cloud providers, colocation operators, and AI companies race to secure power, land, and connectivity ahead of growing demand for generative AI workloads. Industry observers note that suitable development sites with access to reliable electricity are becoming increasingly scarce in key metropolitan markets, prompting operators to secure land well before construction begins.
Although the final use of the Visakhapatnam and Pune properties has not been officially disclosed, the acquisitions signal Tata's intent to expand its AI-ready digital infrastructure footprint. As enterprises increase investments in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, large-scale campuses capable of supporting future GPU deployments are expected to become a defining feature of India's next phase of data center growth.
