Visakhapatnam, India - April 27, 2026 - The Government of Andhra Pradesh has unveiled a proposed USD 15 billion artificial intelligence-focused data center project in Visakhapatnam, with Google expected to play a central role in the development.

The large-scale project is planned as a 1-gigawatt (GW) AI-ready data center campus, positioning it among the most ambitious digital infrastructure initiatives in India. The development is intended to support high-performance computing, cloud services, and advanced AI workloads, aligning with the country’s growing demand for digital and compute capacity.

State officials indicated that the project is part of a broader strategy to transform Visakhapatnam into a major technology and data center hub. The coastal city offers key advantages, including access to subsea cable connectivity, land availability, and proximity to renewable energy resources.

The proposed facility is expected to be developed in phases, with initial groundwork focusing on securing land, power supply, and regulatory approvals. Authorities are also working to establish the necessary ecosystem, including fiber connectivity and supporting infrastructure, to enable large-scale operations.

Government representatives highlighted that the project could generate significant economic benefits, including job creation, infrastructure development, and increased investment in the region. The initiative is also expected to attract global technology companies and strengthen India’s position in the global AI and cloud computing landscape.

While Google’s involvement has been outlined as part of the project framework, details regarding timelines, final investment commitments, and construction schedules are yet to be finalized. The announcement currently reflects a policy-level initiative and strategic intent rather than a fully executed agreement.

The project aligns with India’s broader push to expand domestic data center capacity and build sovereign AI infrastructure. As demand for AI-driven applications continues to grow, large-scale investments in data centers are becoming critical to supporting digital transformation across industries.

Industry observers note that hyperscale developments of this scale require substantial coordination across power, land, and regulatory frameworks. If realized, the Visakhapatnam project would mark a major milestone in India’s digital infrastructure expansion.

The announcement underscores increasing collaboration between state governments and global technology companies as India seeks to accelerate its role in the next generation of AI-driven innovation.
