Copenhagen, Denmark - May 7, 2026 - Danish power cable manufacturer NKT has partnered with Swedish infrastructure specialist AKEA to deliver grid connections for three new data center developments in Greater Copenhagen, highlighting the growing pressure AI and cloud expansion are placing on Europe’s electricity infrastructure.
Under the agreement, NKT will provide turnkey power cable systems for the projects, including underground cable routes connecting the facilities to Denmark’s public electricity grid at either 50kV or 132kV. The scope includes cable supply, accessories, installation works, commissioning activities, and project management.
The projects are intended to support the rapidly increasing power demands associated with hyperscale data centers, AI workloads, and broader digitalization trends across Europe. Industry forecasts continue to show strong growth in electricity consumption from data centers as artificial intelligence adoption accelerates and cloud computing infrastructure expands.
“Data centres are becoming critical components of modern infrastructure,” said Emilie Condrup, CEO of AKEA. She added that reliable grid connectivity and timely execution are becoming increasingly important as digital infrastructure demand rises across the region.
NKT said the collaboration reinforces its role in supporting mission-critical infrastructure projects across Denmark and Europe. The company emphasized that data center growth is placing new demands on transmission and distribution systems, increasing the need for resilient and future-proof electricity infrastructure.
Carlos Fernandez, Executive Vice President and Head of Distribution at NKT, said the company is leveraging expertise from across its operations to deliver “reliable and high-quality power infrastructure” for AKEA’s developments.
The announcement comes as Denmark and the broader Nordic region continue to attract large-scale digital infrastructure investment due to strong renewable energy availability, stable grid conditions, and favorable connectivity ecosystems. Copenhagen, in particular, has emerged as a strategic market for hyperscale and colocation deployments serving Northern Europe.
To support growing infrastructure demand, NKT is currently expanding medium-voltage cable production capacity at facilities in Denmark and Portugal. The company said the upgrades are expected to come online later this year, increasing its ability to support Europe’s accelerating grid modernization and digital infrastructure buildout.
The partnership also reflects a broader industry trend in which power infrastructure providers are becoming increasingly central to data center expansion strategies. As AI-driven facilities require larger and more stable energy supplies, operators are prioritizing long-term grid connectivity and dedicated power delivery systems alongside traditional data center construction.
