Scaleway Enters Italy with Milan Cloud Region, Strengthening European Sovereign AI Push

Milan, Italy - March 19, 2026 - Scaleway has officially launched a new cloud region in Milan, marking its expansion into Italy as part of a broader strategy to scale sovereign cloud and AI infrastructure across Europe.

The new Milan region is being deployed with a three-availability-zone architecture, designed to deliver redundancy and high availability for enterprise and AI workloads. The first availability zone, located in Settimo Milanese, is already operational, while two additional zones in Basiglio and central Milan are expected to come online in the coming months.

The expansion is backed by Iliad Group, which has committed approximately EUR 3 billion (~USD 3.4 million) toward cloud and AI infrastructure development across Europe. The Milan rollout represents a key milestone in that investment, extending Scaleway’s footprint beyond its existing regions in France, the Netherlands, and Poland.

According to the company, the new region is designed to support AI-driven workloads, cloud-native applications, and enterprise digital transformation, with a focus on providing low-latency services to customers in Southern Europe. The infrastructure is expected to be hosted across multiple facilities, leveraging colocation data centers to accelerate deployment timelines.

Chief Executive Officer Damien Lucas emphasized the importance of regional cloud capacity in the current geopolitical and technological climate, noting that Europe must ensure access to locally built hyperscale cloud platforms. The Milan region aligns with this vision by enabling organizations to keep data within European jurisdictions while accessing advanced compute capabilities.

In parallel with the infrastructure rollout, Scaleway has established a local office in Milan to support customer engagement and partnerships. The company is also pursuing compliance with Italian public-sector requirements, including certification under the country’s national cybersecurity framework, to expand into government and regulated industry workloads.

The move comes amid rising demand for sovereign cloud solutions, as enterprises and governments seek greater control over data residency and security while scaling AI and high-performance computing deployments. Milan, as one of Southern Europe’s key digital and financial hubs, provides a strategic entry point for serving both domestic and regional markets.

With additional cloud regions planned in Germany and Sweden, Scaleway is positioning itself as a European alternative to global hyperscalers, aiming to build a distributed, AI-ready cloud platform rooted in regional infrastructure and regulatory alignment.
