Tamil Nadu Deepens Digital Infrastructure Push With Major L&T Data Center Investment

Chennai, India - June 4, 2026 - Tamil Nadu has signed a memorandum of understanding with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for investments totaling INR 18,600 crore (~USD 1.94 billion) across data center infrastructure, electronics manufacturing, and shipbuilding projects, strengthening the state’s position as one of India’s fastest-growing digital infrastructure hubs.

The largest component of the agreement involves a planned INR 15,000 crore (~USD 1.75 billion) expansion of an L&T data center facility in Kancheepuram district near Chennai. The project is expected to generate approximately 500 jobs and significantly expand hyperscale and enterprise digital infrastructure capacity in southern India.

The investment reflects the growing importance of Chennai and the broader Tamil Nadu region in India’s rapidly expanding AI and cloud infrastructure market. Access to submarine cable connectivity, established industrial infrastructure, renewable energy availability, and proximity to enterprise customers have increasingly positioned Chennai as a strategic data center destination.

India’s data center industry has grown rapidly in recent years as AI adoption, cloud services, and digital transformation drive higher demand for compute infrastructure. According to India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the country’s operational data center capacity has increased from 375 MW in 2020 to more than 1,500 MW by 2025.

Tamil Nadu has emerged as one of the key beneficiaries of that growth. Industry analysts increasingly view Chennai as a major digital gateway because of its extensive subsea cable connectivity into Asia-Pacific markets and its growing ecosystem of hyperscale operators and cloud providers.

Alongside the data center expansion, L&T will invest INR 2,500 crore in an electronics and electronic systems manufacturing facility in Coimbatore, expected to create around 2,000 jobs. The company also plans to invest INR 1,100 crore to expand its shipbuilding complex at Kattupalli in Tiruvallur district to support offshore and maritime infrastructure activities.

The combined projects are expected to generate approximately 8,200 jobs across the state and align with Tamil Nadu’s broader strategy of attracting investments in advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure, and technology-led industrial sectors.

The announcement comes amid intensifying competition among Indian states to secure hyperscale data center and AI infrastructure investments. Operators are increasingly prioritizing locations with scalable power availability, subsea connectivity, and strong policy support as AI workloads continue driving demand for high-density compute infrastructure.

For Tamil Nadu, the agreement further reinforces its ambition to become one of India’s leading AI and digital infrastructure markets over the coming decade.
