Google Cloud / NextEra GW-Scale AI Data Center Campus

Status: Major Strategic Partnership Announced (Today) / Under Development   |   Location: Multiple GW-scale hubs across the United States (Locations undisclosed, 3 sites already under development)

Project Overview

The partnership between Google Cloud and NextEra Energy, announced today, December 9, 2025, marks one of the most critical infrastructure commitments in the United States, directly addressing the massive and growing power demands of Artificial Intelligence (AI). NextEra Energy, the nation's largest renewable developer, has set an ambitious goal of building 15 Gigawatts (GW) of new generation capacity by 2035, primarily to power these AI data center hubs.

This alliance signifies a shift in data center site selection, which is now dominated by power availability rather than just land cost. The agreement envisions the development of multiple GW-scale data center campuses across the United States, with three hubs already confirmed to be under development. The sheer power requirement for modern AI models—which can consume up to three times the electricity of traditional cloud computing—necessitates this direct involvement in power generation.

To meet the sustainability targets of Google Cloud, the infrastructure will focus on clean energy and renewable power. NextEra is exploring a diverse energy mix, including traditional renewables (solar and wind) and cutting-edge solutions like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs - small-scale nuclear) and gas plants equipped with Carbon Capture technology. This is designed to ensure reliable, massive power while minimizing the environmental footprint.

The new facilities will be designed specifically for the rigorous demands of high-density AI workloads, meaning they will feature integrated, advanced liquid cooling systems to handle the thermal load of thousands of powerful GPUs. By securing both the computational power and the energy infrastructure through this multi-billion-dollar, multi-year strategic partnership, Google is ensuring its capacity to lead the AI race for the next decade.
